The State Fair opens, Edmond throws its monthly street party, Scissortail Park hosts a full day of Indian food and culture, and a farm south of town officially kicks off the season. There is also a number worth knowing if you are watching the housing market, and it is not the one you would expect. Here is what is on my radar for September 14 through 20.
The State Fair Opens Thursday
The Oklahoma State Fair opens Thursday, September 17, and runs through September 27 at the Fairgrounds. It is ten days of corn dogs, livestock barns, and a midway lit up every night, and it is the one event on the calendar that turns into a family tradition whether you plan on it or not. If you only make it out once this fall, opening weekend is a good time to go before the crowds build. (VisitOKC)
Heard On Hurd Takes Over Edmond
Downtown Edmond’s Broadway shuts down for Heard on Hurd this Saturday, September 19, from 6 to 10pm. Food trucks, local vendors, and live music fill the street, admission is free, and the event usually pulls close to 20,000 people. If you have ever wondered why Edmond keeps landing on every best place to live list, this is the night to go see it for yourself. (TravelOK)
A Full Day Of India At Scissortail Park
The India Food and Arts Festival fills Scissortail Park this Sunday, September 20, from 11am to 9pm. Expect authentic food, henna, and a full day of Bollywood and folk performances, all free, with organizers expecting more than 16,000 people to come through. Fall Opens South Of Town At Orr Family Farm
Orr Family Farm opens for the season Saturday, September 19, with its Apple Festival, pumpkin patch, hayrides, and more, running 10am to 6pm. The heat has not gotten the memo yet, but this is the first real sign that fall has arrived in the metro. Go before the October crowds find it. (Orr Family Farm)
What's Actually Happening In The Housing Market
OKC metro’s median sale price sat at $274,818 in August, per Redfin, down just slightly from a year ago. Days on market ticked up to 36, and sales volume actually rose about 3 percent year over year. Translation: prices have leveled off and buyers have a little more room to breathe than they did a year ago, but homes priced right are still moving. Whichever side of that you are on, it is worth a real conversation, not just a headline. (Redfin)
